History: Peter was raised in the shadow of his older brother Nathan. Regardless, Peter looked up to his brother and constantly tried to get his attention and approval. While their mother doted on her youngest son, she always had higher expectations for the older of the two. Peter was considered unmotivated and vulnerable. The weaker of the brothers. And so Angela Petrelli focused most of her attention on Nathan's schooling and career. She'd let Peter indulge in his offbeat choices, but she did not approve. Peter's father was not around much during his childhood; usually too preoccupied with work. They had fond moments here and there, but Arthur Petrelli was not the warm/fuzzy type. When Arthur died, there was a cover-up as to the cause of death. It was an accident, his mother and brother insisted. The fact that the Petrelli patriarch committed suicide is hidden from Peter.
Peter attended nursing school and worked hard to attain his current job as a hospice nurse. His family felt as if he was wasting his time in said profession and showed their displeasure at every opportunity. While their disappointment wounded him, Peter wouldn't change his mind and refused to pursue another line of work. He also volunteered at his brother's campaign office when time allowed.
Recurring dreams in which Peter is flying over New York City began to haunt Peter. There were times when, half-asleep, he swore that his feet hovered above the floor. He began to believe that these dreams were a sign; that he truly could fly. After many hours spent at a local library, a book by Chandra Suresh caught his eye. This book, Activating Evolution, delves into the phenomena of abilities or powers that ordinary people around the world are suddenly acquiring. Peter brought this book to his brother and confided his belief that he is one of those people and is developing an ability. He also shared his dreams with his brother and tried to assure him that they tie into this ability: flight. Nathan scoffed and worried that his brother was losing his mind.
Peter did not give up on his beliefs and set out to prove his brother wrong. One cold New York night, Peter called Nathan from the rooftop of a tall city building. He ranted to Nathan that he could indeed fly and provided the address where his brother could find him. Once there, Nathan got to Peter just as he was about to take that fateful leap. Grabbing his brother back from the ledge, Nathan tried to talk some sense into his brother and told him (in no uncertain words) that something like this had better not happen again. Peter refused to listen and informed his brother that he'd keep trying until he succeeded. He'd jump off as many buildings as it took.
